As healthcare providers, we entered this field driven by a desire to help others. However, the system's focus on efficiency has shifted our practice from values driven to value driven. This shift, coupled with overwork and lack of appreciation, makes it increasingly challenging to deliver quality care.
Jill Lepore, of The New Yorker, aptly describes burnout as a depletion of one's efficacy, leading to exhaustion and cynicism. We must acknowledge our role in perpetuating this system. While change may be slow, we can take ownership of our lives and careers. Despite fears and doubts, we can align our actions with our highest values.
By living in sync with our values, we not only enhance our own lives but also positively impact those around us. As healthcare providers, we can lead by example, inspiring a shift in behavior among our peers, students, and patients. This is why I'm dedicated to helping providers rediscover their core values and redesign their lives accordingly.
